Indiana Grand Racing & Casino is giving a new look and feel to the Backstretch Café, located just outside the stable gate entrance to the barn area. The Backstretch Café, which is open to the public, will feature a new menu that will focus on both American and Mexican fare, giving guests a wide variety of options throughout the day.

The Backstretch Café opens daily at 5 a.m. and overlooks the race course where guests can watch morning race horse workouts to compliment their dining experience. Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are also be available seven days a week.

“Until racing begins, we are open daily until 1 p.m.,” said Amanda Irwin, Backstretch Café manager. “Once racing begins Tuesday, May 6, we will extend our hours to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We are also offering a ‘Blue Plate Special’ each day at lunch for $4.95, and those have been very popular so far.”

The daily specials have included items such as Beef Manhattan, pork enchiladas and baked sausage with roasted potatoes. The Café also offers standard grill items such as hamburgers, jumbo tenderloins, tacos, burritos, salads and hot wings.

“Everybody really likes our taco meat,” said Irwin. “Our Hispanic menu has gone over very well.”

The Backstretch Café seats 60 inside with an additional 20 spaces provided outdoors on the patio. New patio furniture was recently added to update the area for all guests.

“We are a family establishment and children are welcome,” said Irwin. “We even carry ice cream treats for the kids.”

In addition to the menu, the Backstretch Café has expanded its offerings to include a convenience store, complete with personal items such as toothpaste and soaps along with snacks and other food items.

Irwin, who has been with Indiana Grand since May 2008, is joined in the Backstretch Café by Wilma Wilson and Julie Walton. All three are ready to serve the horsemen and the public as live racing prepares to get underway Tuesday, May 6.

While dining at the Backstretch Café, guests can also watch and wager on the races through the television screens located in the restaurant. Self serve betting machines are also provided. A portion of the live racing can also be viewed through the windows as the horses head into the final turn of each race.
