Beach Bum Eddie tops list of qualifiers for Blue River Derby Final

It was a quick gate to wire performance for Beach Bum Eddie and Jockey Cesar Esqueda. The duo rallied in front of the pack the entire way for the win and earned the fastest time of two trials on the racing program Saturday, July 9. They will return for the $100,000 final set for Saturday, July 30 with hopes of adding their first stakes win to their credentials.

Beach Bum Eddie was quiet in the gate and waited for the signal to go. He rallied hard to the lead and never looked back, winning the event by one and one-quarter lengths in a time of :19.734 seconds. Coco Beach and Berkley Packer easily bested the rest to finish second while Wrs Kool Bob and Shanley Jackson rounded out the trifecta.

Beach Bum Eddie has three wins in four starts for 2016 and just missed the title in his last start in the $90,000 Harley Greene Derby. The three-year-old son of Escondido Beach has been consistent throughout his brief career for owner –trainer Tony Cunningham. He heads into the final with five career wins in nine career starts and earnings in excess of $60,000.

Beach Bum Eddie was no surprise to the wagering public, paying $4.80, $3.20, $2.40 across the board as the favorite in the field. Beach Bum Eddie has only finished off the board once in nine career starts, which always makes him a threat at the finish line.

Another threat at the finish is WH Kenny G and Jockey Jose Beltran, who recovered from a stumble at the start to take the second trial of the Blue River Derby in a time of :19.810 seconds, ranking second on the list of finalists behind Beach Bum Eddie. The three-year-old son of Gold Medal Jess returns off a stellar two-year-old season where he finished up the year with a win in the $194,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity. He is now two for two in 2016 heading into the final.
