Captain BD strolls in QHRAI Derby trials
Captain BD and Alejandro Luna topped the list of qualifiers for the upcoming $100,000-added QHRAI final set for Saturday, Oct. 22. Captain BD won the first of three trials for the QHRAI Derby to complete the 12-race all-Quarter Horse card at Indiana Grand Saturday, Oct. 8.
Starting from post two, Captain BD rallied out of the gate to get the first call, moving over to the path closest to the inside rail. The three-year-old black Captain Courage gelding led the field the entire way during the 400-yard dash, winning by three-quarters of a length over Beyondthegamewagon and Berkley Packer, who closed in quickly for second. Dynamite 123 and Santiago Mendez rounded out the trifecta. The time of the race was :19.777 seconds.
Captain BD earned his second straight win at Indiana Grand. He came into the race off a victory in the $74,000 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby in early July. Captain BD is now four for six in 2016 for trainer Sacramento Chavez and owner David Gonzalez. Captain BD paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.10 as the race favorite.
The second fastest qualifier for the QHRAI Derby was recorded in the final race of the night as Persistent PYC and Larry Payne rallied home for the win in a time of :19.790 seconds. The PYC Paint Your Wagon gelding used a closing kick to pass rivals for the win by a neck over race favorite WH Kenny G and jockey Cesar Esqueda. TF Jess a Leader and Alejandro Luna finished a head back in third to best the rest of the tightly-bunched pack at the finish line.
Owned by Levings Racing LLC and trained by Kalah Welch, Persistent PYC was making his first start in Indiana from Arapahoe Park in Colorado. It was his maiden-breaking performance in six starts for 2016.
The entire field that will advance to the QHRAI final, with jockey and time, includes: Captain BD (Alejandro Luna, :19.777); Persistent PYC (Larry Payne, :19.790); WH Kenny G (Cesar Esqueda, :19.825); TF Jess A Leader (Alejandro Luna, :19.846); Beyondthegamewagon (Berkley Packer, :19.886); BP Tres Seis Policy (Rodney Prescott, :19.912); Slick Melody (Santiago Mendez, :19.932); Dynamite 123 (Santiago Mendez, :19.934); Wrs Quick Eagle (Berkley Packer, :19.941); and A Tacky Chick (Cristian Esqueda, :19.942). The QHRAI Derby will be joined by the finals of the $150,000-added Miss Roxie Little Futurity, the $100,000-added Governor’s Stake and the $75,000-added Indiana Championship to boost purse money to more than $425,000 for the final all-Quarter Horse night of racing Saturday, Oct. 22. The evening will feature an appearance by Martha Claussen of the Wrangler Q-Racing Aces and the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) will provide $2 race wagers and long-sleeved t-shirt giveaways while supplies last.
