Coco Beach part of big night for Randy Smith

Coco Beach was the fastest qualifier in the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby trials Saturday, Aug. 13, but she was also part of a bigger picture. Trainer Randy Smith scored wins in seven of the nine races on the all-Quarter Horse racing card at Indiana Grand to set a new record for most wins recorded in one night by a trainer of any breed.

After winning the first of two trials for the QHRAI SSA Derby with My Louisiana Rod, Smith was walking back to the winner’s circle in the second race of the night to greet Juan Galvan aboard Coco Beach, winners of the second trial. The three-year-old daughter of Escondido Beach, bred and owned by Sheri Miller, completed her journey in the 400-yard dash in a time of :20.007 to possess the fastest time of the 14 horses trying to qualify for the final. Coco Beach led the race the entire way, holding on at the end by a neck over stablemate Jumpn Chick and Berkley Packer.

Coco Beach earned her second win of the year in six starts. She paid $6.20, $3.00 and $2.20 across the board as the second favorite of the field.

The win aboard Coco Beach was one of two on the card for Galvan, who also connected with Beach Zoomer in a QHRAI SSA Futurity trial win. In all, only three jockeys were victorious on the nine-race card with Packer winning five, Galvan winning two and Rolando Pina also winning two.

Qualifiers for the QHRAI SSA Derby, with jockey and time, include: Coco Beach (Juan Galvan, :20.007); Jumpn Chick (Berkley Packer, :20.045); My Louisiana Rod (Berkley Packer, :20.097); Megatron Harry (Juan Galvan, :20.176); Who Jack (Osdany Leal, :20.176); Fast N Famous Eagle (Cesar Esqueda, :20.278); Dixie Cup Lou (Leonel Bolanos, :20.378); Shake Rattle N Rolla (Alex Estrada, :20.397); Miss Huerfanita (Rolando Pina, :20.512); and Mr Fool Me Twice (Cristian Esqueda, :20.517). Of the 10 headed to the final, Smith trains the four fastest qualifiers. Joe Davis will also saddle two in the final, Fast N Famous Eagle and Miss Huerfanita.

The QHRAI SSA Derby, QHRAI SSA Futurity, and the Bob Woodard Memorial finals will all be contested on Saturday, Aug. 27, which has been tagged “Corntastic.” The evening will feature numerous corn-themed events, from a corn recipe contest to cornhole competitions to strolling scarecrows.
