Corntastic showcases weekend activities
The first annual Corntastic will top off a great evening of racing Saturday, Aug. 27 featuring numerous activities to complement the 11-race card that features three Quarter Horse stakes. The $192,739.00 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction (SSA) Futurity will be the largest purse for the event in the 17-year history of the event while the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby will offer a purse of $71,954, just missing last year’s highest purse ever for the stakes race set at $80,000.
A total of 47 horses attempted to qualify for the SSA Futurity final with the top 10 led by CB Come Fly With Me and Jockey Rolando Pina. The two-year-old filly is owned by Carolyn Bruce and trained by Joe Davis and just missed a stakes win earlier this summer in the $131,000 Jaguar Rocket Stakes, finishing a neck back in second to DNA Dales Prospect. The Desirio daughter has two wins in four starts in her brief career.
The top qualifier for the SSA Derby was Coco Beach, ridden by Berkley Packer for trainer Randy Smith. Coco Beach is one of four from the Smith barn advancing to the final. The top four qualifiers come from his barn.
Probably the most intriguing final will come in the $75,000 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic featuring the older horses. Stinkin Rich, a standout two-year-old, was the quickest qualifier and returns for Trainer Matt Frazier seeking to defeat such older powerhouse horses such as Beach Cartel, second in the standings for time, Tiny’s First Pepsi, WH Design By Dash and Pistolpacking Pepsi. Ron Brown is the only trainer to have two in the Woodard final (Tiny’s First Pepsi and Pistolpacking Pepsi).
To help set the tone for an exciting night of racing, Indiana Grand will host Corntastic, featuring a plethora of corn-themed events. A special Family Fun Zone will be offered in the Pavilion Tent featuring shows from Silly Safari. The animal shows will take place from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. and will feature many exotic performers. At the conclusion of each interactive show, kids may meet the animals in person.
Other activities in the Family Fun Zone including a mechanical bull, hay rides from 7-8 p.m., strolling scarecrows, a strolling magician, face painting, and a bounce house. In addition, a corn recipe contest will be held. Interested guests may drop off their favorite recipes including corn as an ingredient at the special mailbox outside the winner’s circle. Indiana Grand Chefs will then choose the top three submissions and create them in-house to taste test the products. The top recipe will receive a prize and will be featured at the Grand Buffet on the casino floor.
In addition to the corn recipe contest, guests may guess the number of corn kernels in a jar for a special prize and a cornhole competition will take place trackside in addition to regular Saturday evening activities that include Five Grand, Beat the Big Guy and games of skill from the winner’s circle. Also, the food outlets will offer special fare featuring corn foods, such as corn dogs.
The winner of Session Two for the 007 Jock’s Agent contest will also be awarded during the night. The winner will receive a trophy and $1,000.
